THE ELVES

ELVES

The elves of Véneanár, are a tall, lean race of people, taller than the average human. Typical for elves are their pointed ears, and high cheekbones. They have big, expressive, almond shaped, eyes, (in the most splendid colours). They have sharp, angular features, their faces narrower than a humans. Elves have a natural grace other races lack, (besides the Fey) and have a fragile beauty about them, but to think them a fragile people would be a mistake.

They have excellent night vision and can see further over a distance than most. They are fast and agile, and all are born with a natural talent for magic, though some more than others.

Distant cousins of the winged Fey, elves have a vulnerability to iron and steel, which is why a great many of their weapons are made from silver, wood, adamant, obsidian and precious gemstones. If iron/steel touches elven flesh, is can make them very ill. If it pierces elven flesh and enters the blood stream, it acts as a poison would, killing them within a day.

The elven people have strong ties to the lands, their magic and mystique inexplicably linked. Even those who do not practice magic feel the connection to nature, and the elven people have maintained the practice of wearing either foot-wraps or bare feet throughout their long history.

MAGICAL TALENT

All elves are born with the innate ability to wield magic and have a natural affinity for one of four elements. Fire, Lightening/storms, Earth. Ice.

Some are born with an abundance of magical talent and need very little training to master their abilities. Though magic can be detected, their full powers do not manifest fully until around the age of five or six. Many begin their studies shortly after, so they are able to manage their powers. Untrained magic can become unstable if a mage is not taught how to control it.

Elves with only minimal magical talent can still hone and master their inherent magical traits and can become almost as powerful as natural-born mages, although many do not. It takes many, many extra years of training to do so.

MAGICAL CLASSES

Nénharma (Dream-walker)
Being Nénharma is not something that can be taught. A rare ability that enables the mage to shape Nénh’tarille, the dream realm, and walk among dreaming minds. Though they need permission to enter those who dream lucidly like the Nuvian.

Healer
The healer heals. They are the physicians. They can heal and regrow broken bones, tendons and cartilage, make and administer medicines. They cannot, however replenish lost-blood, or cure death.

Druid
Keeper of traditions and histories. Performs all the sacred rituals and religious rites, including the Bonding Ritual and Funeral Rites. Druids have a close connection to the spirit world beyond the veil and most have mastered all four elements. They are responsible for paying homage to the gods in their temples, undertaking an annual pilgrimage to do so.

Battle-Mage
A master of all elements, the battle-mage can imbue their blades and arrows with battle runes, wielding flaming swords or frosted arrows on the battle fields.

Necromancer
A necromancer can raise the dead and command blood. Little more than this is known about their powers, necromancy being dark and forbidden magic.

LOVE & FAMILY

An elven bonding ceremony is more than mere words, it is a blood oath, a merging of souls, which is not easily broken. The two are bound together, to break it is to feel a physical agony, it is the separation of souls, neither ever fully whole again. For this reason, it could take an elf centuries to choose a mate, such bonds are not entered into lightly.

Elves are not immortal, but they are long lived. The average lifespan of the elves is somewhere between 1,000 – 1,500 years and 500 – 800 years for a half-blooded elf. This causes the elves to have a much slower reproduction rate than other races. Multiple births are even rarer and high risk, their bodies too narrow to take the strain if unaided by a trained Healer.

WARFARE

The elves are fierce warriors, exceptional archers and brilliant engineers. The latter due in large part to their alliance with the dwarven peoples. Although the elves do not have a dedicated naval class, there is no ship faster than an elven ship. All elves are trained in basic combat, even the royal family. Due to the low birth-rate, the elves cannot afford to take their people to war without a great deal of lengthy consideration. They risk heavy casualties and the potential to lose a large amount of their population is high.

WARRIOR CLASSES

Dragon Riders
The ability to commune with dragons is an ability that manifest in only a handful every few generations. The Dragon Riders have a telepathic bond with dragons, allowing them to pair up in battle. A formidable foe.

Nuvian
An ancient and elite warrior class bound to the spirits of animals. Spirit runes are tattooed to their bodies, many choosing to have full body tattoos. They can channel the spirit magic in battle for added strength, speed, and agility. The Nuvian can run for hours without stopping, though extreme exhaustion will deplete the runes.
Some are known to partner with the animal they are bound with, enabling them to see through the animals eyes, making the Nuvian excellent scouts. Nuvian warriors dream lucidly and can speak with wandering spirits in the dream realm.
The Nuvian train for close to a decade, beginning from age fifteen, in order to master the runes. The training itself is rigorous and brutal, the recruits only earning the right to bear the tattoos if they pass the final trials.
More than two thirds of the recruits fail or drop out before they reach the final trials.

Infantry
The elven infantry consists of warriors, archers, siege and demolition experts (the elves learned a lot from Roggar Stonefist), scouts, and mounted warriors. Often it is the archers or siege experts who command their ships.

A BRIEF HISTORY

Since before the Dark Times, elves have dwelled in the realms Véneanár. They ruled the lands of Thril-Garëw and Nildör through the ages, since before recorded time. Their two great nations, once the envy of all.
Then, during the Fifth Age, the humans of Nildör rebelled, and forced the elves from their ancestral lands, all traces of them destroyed and struck from the histories. The elves fled to neighboring realms, many back to Thril-Garëw, some far across the sea to Tarlisian shores, others to the Fey lands of the Far Isles.
